Who we are:
CIDI is a Kenyan development Organization trying to address the causes of poverty and injustice to the poor vulnerable/marginalized societies, founded and registered in 2000 as a public Organization that supports communities to initiate and drive their development agenda by harnessing and growing their resources as well as securing their basic rights and services from duty bearers.
CIDI works with poor, marginalized and disadvantaged communities as its primary target group and looks to provide them support in uplifting themselves from their situation through their own efforts. A secondary target group involves organized communities who are focused in looking to uplift themselves in a sustainable manner through asset building.
CIDI thus invests significant resources to build, strengthen and sustain the core capacities of these communities by developing thoughtful, long-term collaborations with other actors such as governments, non-profit organizations, the business sectors and individuals to achieve social justice.
To create an informed and democratic society where problem management will be achieved through effective participation by all communities.
"To promote sustainable development of communities for social justice, through institution building, partnerships, resource mobilization and policy influencing".
CIDI's Strategic Niche is 'promoting a model that enhances growth and sustainability of communities by their strong engagement in owning and driving their development efforts, through capacity development, community philanthropy and local resource mobilization'. In line with the CIDI's mission to grow philanthropy in Kenya, the Organization supports 20 communities to build their own endowment funds. These communities have a cumulative endowment of about US$ 650,000 Million within the CIDI Endowment Fund.
CIDI model for community development:
The CIDI model for community development is a unique one that is now regionally recognized as best practice - most recently by the Community Development Trust Fund Awards for Best Practices. It is based on CIDI's Theory of Change:
"CIDI believes that systemic and enduring change is possible when communities are able to initiate and drive their development agenda, work with governments and other actors to access basic rights and services as well as harness and grow their own resources. CIDI therefore invests in enhancing organized community-led initiatives to create a firm basis for sustainable development and social justice"
The unique components of the model are:-- Capacity building - empower the community to be organized and to identify their development priorities. This ensures ownership of the solutions and the process.
- Continuous Accountability - for the community to be accountable and transparent to itself first as owners of the programme and to other partners

Where We Work
CIDI believes strongly in the ability of the communities to identify and drive their own development agenda. As such the organization responds to requests or demands that emanates from these communities. In responding to these demands or requests, CIDI attempts as far as is possible to ensure its interventions have a national perspective by covering a diverse number of counties or regions. Our focus areas include slum settlements and arid/semi-arid areas.
